The starting quarterback position is empty for the first time in 3 years for Varsity Football Head Coach Lou Vesce. His main man Jeremy Ramos departs this year, leaving the quarterback position open to anyone. A player looking to claim the important position is junior John Hernandez. Hernandez has had experience at quarterback, playing on junior varsity, and was the second string quarterback for Vesce this year on Varsity. He looks to start for the first time on offense for varsity this year. Who the starter is going to be is not set in stone yet.
Hernandez must prove to Vesce and his coaching staff he is the best out of the three players trying out for the position. James Marcus Gumbs and new-comer Tom Curry are the two players also looking to start at quarterback. Gumbs played on junior varsity last year, trying to develop into a starting quarterback during last off-season. In the first game of the season against Susan Wagner, Gumbs broke his collar bone and was out for the rest of the season. He looks for a comeback year only this time on Varsity. Tom Curry played for St. Joseph by the Sea and recently got transferred over to Port Richmond. He played receiver for the team but Vesce has different plans for him this year. The coaches believe he has a great body built for the quarterback position, and want to convert him into a quarterback.
Hernandez has had good experience at quarterback though, which makes him the favorite to start this ye
ar. Hernandez has the potential and the necessary mind set and attitude to play quarterback and to be a leader for this team. His brother Joe Hernandez played under Vesce for 2 years and came through big in both years. He even almost got a scholarship to a Division One college! Vesce and the Raider fans hope to see Hernandez become an impact player on offense, for he already is an impact player on defense. Starting at Freeland Safety his first year on varsity. Hernandez lays the wood and gives opposing quarterbacks nightmares after throwing the ball, snatching interceptions. A memorable play by Hernandez cam in the classic game against Curtis where he ended a list minute drive by the Curtis Warriors by intercepting a ball thrown by Xaviah Stone and ensuring the number one seed in the PSAL playoffs for the Raiders.
The most important position on any football team on most peoples opinions is the quarterback position. To play this, you must be smart and a leader. Jeremy Ramos is the perfect example. Now that Ramos is gone a new player must step up. The person that qualifies for this position best is definitely John Hernandez. He has to have a good year for the Raiders. If the Raiders are going to make a run for the championship again, Hernandez has to step up. And this offseason, Hernandez is putting the work in, and becoming a leader.
The new starting quarterback for the Port Richmond Varsity Football Team can very well be John Hernandez. His teammates love him, the coaches love him, and players will learn to fear him if they haven't learned to fear him on defense yet.
