Francis Lewis Baseball looking to have an Incredible Season

By: Jaehyung Park

baseball2

Be prepared: Francis Lewis High School’s baseball team, the Patriots, is expected to have an incredible season. They are a team that can comeback from a 9:0 deficit, to end up winning 10:21, miraculously. Just ask Thomas Edison High School (the team they’ve defeated), if it’s too hard to believe. The Patriots are a force when it comes to offense, as they can make a baseball game look like a football game, in terms of when looking at the final score. There is reason for optimism, to expect the Patriots to have a breakout magical year.

The Patriots have four impacting players on their team: Jonathon Boboa (SP), David Torres (SS), Ozzie Roblus (3B), and Cassandra Jabie (CF). Boboa can dial up his fastball up to 91-miles per hour and throws a changeup and curveball to go along with it. His favorite player is unsurprisingly, Josh Beckett, who is known for his blazing fastball and top-notch curveball. Boboa is currently being scouted by Arizona State College, whereas Roblus is being scouted by ASU. Torres and Boboa started their baseball careers when they were a freshman. Jabie first started in his sophomore year. Jabie’s favorite players are Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran in MLB. All four players’ favorite team is the New York Mets. If for whatever reason their pro-ball careers are corrupted/interfered, they remarked they will pursue being a federal agent or play softball for their career.

Baseball season is almost here and the Patriots are ready to compete with hopefully many contributing players on the team. Their first baseball game will be held on April 8. They will have to stay competitive throughout the season if they want to prove to Cardozo that they are the better team. Cardozo High School is competitive almost every year and is always on top, the players say. But the four players believe they have a great team, and it’s hard to not believe them.

All Prell, All Bergen County Boys Basketball Team

HoopsPrell

This could be one of the youngest first team all-county selections:

Let's meet this year's boys all county basketball team:

Tenafly- Sophomore Chris Orozco and his coach Joe Finizio.

Chris was the most dynamic impact player of 2010. Tenafly made a remarkable turnaround with a 20-5 team record from 4-14 in 2009 and a league title.

As a sophomore, Chris scored 574pts 23ppg and his 1000 2 year career points. Chris shot a sizzling 87% from the foul line 259 out of 297- 8.1 rebounds ppg and 5.4assists pg. The fun part is we can watch him for 2 more years! From Tenafly Chris Orozco

Don Bosco Junior Vaughn Gray and his coach Kevin Diverio

As a junior- Vaughn was the highest rated player by the coaches in the "old NNJIL- or new state conference"

This is a tremendous honor in itself because of the level of competition night in and night out. At 6'5 Vaughn excels in the open court with his size and quickness. He averaged 21.4ppg 5.1 assists and 6.3 rebounds.

A three year varsity player and repeat first team all county selection.

St Mary-Rutherford Kyle Dadika and his coach Matt Stone-

Kyle is a junior forward and averaged 16ppg 13 rbpg and scored in double figures 25 out of 26 games this season.

His inside presence and ability to score on the perimeter led the Gaels to the BCSL National Division Title.

"Kyle was a tremendous presence on offense and defense throughout the year. He is an honor roll student and makes everyone around him better!"- Coach Stone

Old Tappan Junior Shane McLaughlin and his coach Dennis Rossi

Simply put, Shane McLaughlin is the best point guard in Bergen County. He led Old Tappan to a share of the NBIL League Title with Team of the Year Paramus Catholic and a Group 3 State Sectional Title. He was the MVP of the Jack Reilly Holiday Tournament and battled back from a mid-season foot injury. Shane average 16.7 ppg and many times throughout the season scored the most crucial points of a game. He committed less than 3 turnovers a game.

Bergen Catholic Junior Mark Richards and his coach Joe Dinisio-

Mark was instrumental in helping Bergen Catholic compete in this very tough season and reaching the finals of this year's Jamboree- as the 7th seed. "Mark often played his best games in the biggest environments and always was given the toughest defensive assignments"- Coach Dinisio

Some of his highlighted games were against Paramus Catholic-Teaneck-Kennedy and St Joe's-

At 6'4 Mark can score in the paint and has a soft mid-range jumpshot- he averaged 15.1ppg

With this crew of underclassmen coming back next year, we should sit back and enjoy their efforts!

St Joseph's Kai Dominguez and his coach Mike Doherty-

Quote from coach Doherty: "For the past 3 season Kai has been one of the premier perimeter players in Bergen County. His fearlessness and constant energy led Saint Joseph to back to back league championships, 2 Indian Hills Holiday Festival Titles- 3 consecutive Final Four Jamboree appearances and a varsity record of 62-18 over the past 3 season. Kai was the difference maker for SJ on both ends of the floor. He is a tremendous worker and will continue to do great things on and off the court in years to come"- Coach Doherty

Cresskill Senior Tom Hasenstab and his coach Mike Doto

Tom was the number one player in his league and Cresskill's 5'9" point guard-and dynamic leader.  He averaged 12.9ppg 4 rbspg 3 assists pg and 2 steals pg. Nick  Gravina helped the Highlanders to another successful  wrestling season . Wrestling at 103 lbs Nick finished with a record of 38-4 with 18 pins. 112- junior, Jeff Rottingen, Ramsey,  Coach Anthony Petrock

Jeff is a pleasure to coach, he is a hard worker in the room, and is very dedicated to his team and his sport.  He has been the cornerstone of our team for the past three years.  He has placed 2nd in district 5 twice and is a district champ and a region champ this season 2010.  He finished his year by placing 8th in the NJSIAA state tournament in Atlantic City.  He has 99 wins going into his senior year and will continue to set records for Ramsey high school in the upcoming season.Prell_BCCA_Ad

119- junior, Joe Orecchio, Don Bosco, Coach Nunzio Campanile

(25-5) Joey Orecchio had another outstanding season for the Ironmen.  Despite missing almost a month due to injuries Joe managed to win 25 matches this season.  With an injured knee he placed 6th in the prestigious Beast of the east tournament.  He followed that up with his 3rd district title and his 3rd region title.  Joe finished his season with 2nd state medal, earning 4th place in the NJ state tournament.  Joe is currently wrestling at the junior nationals, in preparation for his senior campaign as well as his college career.  Only a junior Joey is on track to be the most decorated wrestler in Don Bosco history

125- sophomore, Connor Melde, Bergen Catholic, Coach Dave Bell

Connor completed his sophomore campaign with a Season Record of 35-3 and fourth place finish at the state tournament. In the state semi-final match it was only a takedown with seconds left in the overtime period which prevented him from reaching the finals. Connor's accomplishments on the season include BCCA, District and Regional championships. He is very technical wrestler that is difficult to score on and is very good from any position. Over the course of the season Connor emerged as team leader and is determined to accomplish his goal of winning a state championship.
