Raider Football Player Profile: Luis Rice

Luis Rice is one of those players who you can describe with one word 'athlete'. He has been playing football since the age of six and is entering his first year on varsity this year. He's very fast and has played the runningback position on teams he's played on in the past. Rice is a playmaker with his quick agile running abilities and will be used this year as a utility player. He could play any position that requires speed on offense such as runningback, wide receiver and he can also play quarterback.

This past season Rice played his first year in Port Richmond. He was planning on transferring to Moore High School this year to play football. He did not play for Port Richmond his freshman year because Moore told him not to play if he wanted o play football his sophomore year at Moore. Rice grew to really enjoy Port Richmond, making new friends, and staying friends with Rotimmie Oni for now about five years which led to his decision to stay in Port Richmond and play football for the Raiders his sophomore year and not Moore.

Rice made a huge impression on junior varsity and varsity coaches this year as he stepped up to play quarterback instead of runningback this year on junior varsity, After the junior varsity Raiders starting quarterback James Marcus Gumbs went down with an unfortunate broken collar bone injury that would keep him out the whole season, Rice stepped up. On defense, Rice played safety just like his football idle Sean Taylor. Rice is very impressive in many areas of the game but his 40 yard dash time clocks at 4.80! That's tremendous for a high school athlete. His amazing talent led him to winning the Junior Varsity MVP award for Port Richmond. He looks to carry that award on to Varsity and maybe in the future win a Varsity MVP! But most of all bring home another championship to Port Richmond.

Rice has a bright future ahead of him. Once he gets installed into one position on the Port Richmond offense he will become a playmaker. He could be a playmaker at many positions but the most exciting position for him to play would be runningback. Head Coach Lou Vesce and his fellow coaches have many plans for Rice in the future. It will be exciting to see a player of his talent perform on the varsity field.
