New tennis division, same success by Eric Dellaratta
The Lady Canes have pounded their way to an 8-2 record. All the girls seem to do is pour on the runs at key moments of the game. The Lady Canes drilled Largo by a score of 16-0. Their work ethic and performance haven’t been affected by a district change.
The girls’ softball team has changed districts for the 2010 season. They have moved from class 5A to 6A.
“In the new district, we play teams that are farther away,” sophomore second baseman Dani Darby said. “We have never played most of these teams, so that adds in to the equation.”
Switching districts means they are playing teams including St. Petersburg, Seminole, North Port, and Riverview.
The girls relied on their sluggers to produce runs this season. Senior FSU-signee Maddie O’Brien has been a staple in the Lady Canes offense. O’Brien has consistently driven in runs and is considered the most feared hitter in the lineup. But she is not the only player driving in runs. Catcher Jackie Katchuk bombed a grand slam against St. Petersburg. Along with the superb hitting, sophomore pitcher Taylor Sabol keeps the team in games with her power pitching style.
Coach Chuck Poetter has made the little things like base running, fielding fundamentals, and bunting staples of the team’s game plan. But teamwork is the most important aspect of this team.
“Everyone comes out to every practice and works as hard as possible,” Darby said. “We have grown as a team and that has made us better on the field. If we play our games as a team we will come out successful every time.”
If the Lady Canes softball team doesn’t make a deep run in the postseason, it won’t be because a lack of run support.
