EAST LAKE — With ace Alyssa Bache still nursing a sore forearm and leading hitter Kirsten Bembnowski not playing, East Lake coach Mike Estes knew runs would be at a premium Tuesday. The Eagles got clutch hitting from Sarah Schutz and a two-hitter from Kristen Berlo to advance to the region semifinals with a 1-0 win over Boca Ciega.
"(Berlo) was hitting her spots all night," Estes said. "When (Berlo) throws like that we always got a chance."
Berlo was perfect through three innings. Pirates pitcher Malory Allen was equally up to the task until the third inning.
With one out Alyssa Weaver singled and stole second. One out later Schutz delivered a single to left to score Weaver, who avoided the tag with a nifty slide at the plate.
"With (Bembnowski) hurt I made a switch up in the batting order hoping to get more hits," Estes said. "(Schutz) and Alyssa Weaver really came through for us."
Allen singled in the top of the fourth but the Pirates never threatened. Allen also pitched well for Boca Ciega, only giving up four hits and the one run.
"She's only a sophomore which is amazing," coach Michelle Beckert said. "She came through for us. Thank goodness we have her."
