Track and field teams race through the beginning of the season by Katelyn Josephik
The boys and girls track and field season has started and is off to a great start. The 74 runners on the team are practicing every day for their chance to compete in the Pinellas county championship and possibly the state championship.
“Both the ladies and men are training very hard this year. We have numerous highly skilled athletes who should qualify for the regional and state tournament,” said track coach, Robert Jenkins.
The girls’ team has been undefeated with a record of 2-0. The boys’ team has unfortunately been dealt with the record of 0-2.
The team is being lead by several different athletes. On the girls’ team, Zoe and Paige Lombard race in the sprints, Alyssa Nelson competes in the 400 meter run and Tia Akins runs in the mile. For the boys’ team, Brian Bozeat competes in the shot and discus, Derrik Bonelli races in the sprints and Sean Deeb runs the 400 meter run.
“The ladies should finish in the top three in the county meet and they have a chance to win the district meet if everyone keeps training as hard as they are now,” Jenkins said. “The men should finish in the top ten for the county meet and some of them have a chance to win an individual district event.”
