ST. PETERSBURG — The Osceola girls track coaches did a few double takes after glancing at the final team scores.
In fact, they initially didn't believe them.
But it was true.
The Warriors knocked off host and county power Lakewood 185.5-183 to win the girls Class 3A, District 10 team title Wednesday.
The news came with little fanfare because most of the Osceola girls had left, figuring the title was a forgone conclusion.
"This is something we didn't expect," Warriors coach Peter Eagleson said. "We thought Lakewood would win and we'd be fortunate enough to come in second.
"A lot of people had the best week of their season. We had contributions from everyone, even getting seventh- and eighth-place finishes in events. Those really added up for us."
The Spartans, who had won nearly every major meet this season, dominated the jumps, sprints and relays.
Lakewood's Sharell Keys won the long jump (17 feet, 4.5 inches), 100 (12:37) and 200 meters (26.61), and ran a leg on the winning 4x100 relay (49.25). Teammate Kala Funderburk won the high jump (5-0), 400 (57.42) and ran the first leg on the 4x400 (4:11.13) and 4x800 (10:11) relays that each took first.
Osceola, though, had depth in nearly every event and gobbled up points in the pole vault, as well as the middle and distance races.
The Warriors finished 1-2-3 in the pole vault and 3,200. And Alexis Irwin led Osceola with wins in the 800 (2:24.74) and 1,600 (5:37.84).
"We were surprised by the result," said Warriors captain Denae DeVaul, who qualified for regionals in three events. "But everyone stepped up and had a great meet."
The difference might have come in the shot put, where officials ruled that Spartans' Alexis Goodridge reported late and disqualified her from individual events.
On the boys side, Lakewood beat Osceola 153.5-107 for the team title. The Spartans' Kelvin White was the big winner, taking first in the long jump (20-10), 110 hurdles (14.46) and 300 hurdles (40.39).
Largo's Rick Pluta won the 1,600 (4:36.93) and 3,200 (10:17.81).
